National anthem makeup tutorial

Doing your makeup for the stage is quite a bit different than doing your makeup every day.

I took a stage makeup class in college, and in that class I learned how quickly stage lights will bleach all the color our of your face, making you look washed out or even ill. I took that knowledge with me through all of my recitals and performances, keeping in mind that there was a fine line between bringing definition to the face and going so heavy as to look like a clown!

When I found out that I was singing the national anthem at CPAC 2019, I was really excited to figure out my makeup look. I decided to go with something that would look great on camera (5 feet away) and from the audience (500 feet away). With that in mind, the look above is what I came up with.

I think my biggest piece of advice when you're doing makeup for the stage is to define your contour and your eyes. A little bit of eyeliner will go a long way in making your eyes look bigger, and defining the angles of your face under harsh lights will keep you looking fantastic!

How would you do your makeup to sing the national anthem? Let me know in the comments!
