How to dress up a jean skirt
Jean skirts are kind of funny.
I bought this skirt last week on Amazon and showed it in my haul - I immediately got comments like, "That's super 90s!" and "What a throwback!" Jean skirts can definitely can lean that way, and sometimes it's even fun to lean into the 90s aesthetic, but I took those comments as a challenge. How could I take a knee-length, faded jean skirt and yank it into 2019?
I went to my closet to explore my options, and a button-down blouse seemed like a good place to start. Already, the outfit was starting to look more modern. Then I went to my accessories drawer and pulled out a long necklace that I'd bought at Francesca's awhile back. I wrapped it around twice, layered it, and tucked it underneath my collar. Throwing on some gold and purple earrings and a Kate Spade watch, I needed one last touch to complete the look.
I grabbed my spring/summer heels (they're super comfortable and a great way to welcome the new season) and slid them on my feet. Tah-dah! And here's the finished look.
I always think it's fun to play against stereotypes when it comes to certain pieces connoting a certain era. If you're going to wear a pair of bell-bottoms, for example, rather than leaning into the 70s look, wear a blazer and a springy, chiffon blouse. If you're going to wear a 20s-style flapper dress, throw a leather jacket on top. Doing this can keep you from looking like you're wearing a costume and show people that you really know how to style your clothing.
What did you think of this look? Are you convinced? Would you wear a jean skirt? Let me know in the comments!
